Congratulations on your engagement! We are thrilled to be a part of your journey and capture the love and excitement of this special time. Your engagement session is the perfect opportunity to showcase your unique love story and style, and we want to help you make it absolutely unforgettable. That's why we've put together this engagement styling guide, filled with tips and inspiration to help you prepare for your session and make the most out of every moment. From choosing the perfect outfits to selecting the perfect location, we're here to guide you every step of the way. So let's get started and create some magic together!
Although I do not require my clients to order prints with me, now that you have your gallery, you do have the option or ordering high-quality tangible prints, canvases, etc. straight from your gallery! If you choose to print elsewhere, I highly recommend avoiding quick print shops like CVS as the quality can be poor.
Your final gallery will consist of 100-200 images! You will be able to download all the images to your computer or device as well as share the link with friends and family. Depending on the time of year, you can expect to receive your gallery within 3-4 weeks of your photoshoot.
Its session time! Don't worry about posing! I got you covered. The first outfit/location is always a little bit of the "get loose" portion of the shoot, but by the end, you'll feel like a professional! Depending on your outfit choices, we spend about 20-30 minutes in each outfit and spot. I recommend choosing locations in close proximity so we can fit in the most pictures during your session.
Once we have your date set, we will begin planning your session. Using this guide, we will pick the perfect location for your day, along with the best time for your photos. If possible, I always ask my clients to send me their outfit choices ahead of time so I can create the perfect timeline for your outfits during the shoot!
More than likely if you have this guide, we have already connected a bit and chatted about your engagement shoot! If you are booking with your wedding package, your engagement session has already been booked and invoiced with your wedding contract! If you are booking this session separate from a wedding, you'll receive a contract and invoice to secure your date.
Choosing the right location for your engagement session is key to creating photos that are uniquely and authentically you. Think about the places that hold special meaning for you as a couple - maybe it's the coffee shop where you had your first date, the park where you love to walk your dog, or the beach where you spent endless summer days together. Or, maybe you want to explore a new location that you've always wanted to visit. The location you choose should be a reflection of your personalities, your interests, and your love story. Whether you prefer a bustling cityscape or a tranquil natural setting, the right location can set the tone for your entire session and make your photos truly unforgettable. So, take some time to brainstorm and find a location that feels like home to you both - we can't wait to capture the magic!
Choosing the right time of day for your engagement session is crucial to capturing the perfect lighting and mood for your photos. The golden hour, which occurs just after sunrise and just before sunset, is the most sought-after time for photography because the light is soft, warm, and flattering. However, depending on the location and the look you're going for, other times of day can also work well. For example, midday can be great for bright and vibrant cityscape photos, while twilight can create a romantic and moody atmosphere. When deciding on the best time of day for your session, consider the location, the mood you want to convey, and any other practical considerations such as scheduling and weather. Whatever time of day you choose, we'll work together to make the most out of the available light and create photos that are absolutely breathtaking.
Choosing the perfect outfit for your engagement session is an exciting and important part of preparing for your photos. You'll want to choose an outfit that not only looks beautiful but also makes you feel confident and comfortable.
It's equally important for the groom-to-be to dress to impress on your engagement session. Here are five tips to help you choose the perfect outfit:
Props are a great way to add a personal touch and an editorial vibe to your engagement session. Not only do they make your photos unique, but they can also bring out your personality and tell your love story.
An engagement session is not just about taking photos, it's about creating an experience and making memories. One way to make it an unforgettable day is to take off work and make it a day just for the two of you. Plan a day full of activities that you both enjoy, like going to your favorite restaurant, going for a hike, or doing something adventurous.
Another way to make your engagement session an experience is to use it as a trial run for your wedding day. Book a hair and makeup artist and try out different styles to see what works best for you. This will not only make you feel confident on your wedding day but also give you a chance to try out different looks before your big day.
Consider adding a nice dinner date before or after your session. This will give you both a chance to relax and enjoy each other's company without any distractions. It's also a great opportunity to dress up and feel like a million bucks.
Remember, your engagement session is a huge marker in the engagement season. It's a time to celebrate your love and the start of a new chapter in your lives. Make the most of it by turning it into an experience you'll never forget.

Traveling to the Chattanooga area for your session and want to make it a date day? I got you covered! Here are some of my favorite things to do in the Cleveland/Chattanooga Area!
1. When should we book our session?
This depends a little on how quickly you need your pictures. If you have a short engagement, you obviously will not be able to be as selective with the time of year. But if you have some time, consider what season you love the most! Keep in mind, fall and spring sessions book the quickest, so booking earlier is always better!
2. When do you book engagement sessions?
Engagement sessions are booked Monday-Thursday, preferably Monday or Tuesday. The main reason being that most places are much less busy early in the week than on a week day! For example, if you wanted to do your pictures in a restaurant, on a city street, or an overlook on the Ocoee, these places are extremely busy on a Friday or Saturday night! I also reserve weekends for special events and weddings.
3. How long does an engagement session last?
My engagement sessions are 1.5 hours. This gives us plenty of time for a few outfits and locations.
4. How many outfits can we wear during our session?
I recommend 2-3. Keep in mind, it takes about 10 minutes to get back to a car or restroom and change! And depending on if we have to drive to another location, this could be even longer. I think two outfits is perfect to have variety and have the most time for pictures!
5. Do you travel for engagement sessions?
My engagement session includes travel up to 45 minutes from Cleveland, TN, but I love to be adventurous! If you want a location outside of my included distance, mileage rates will apply.
6. What happens if weather calls for rain?
I generally like to wait 1-2 hours before a session to call for rain. Often, the weather might say its going to rain all day but clear up by the time your session arrives! If it does rain during your session time, either we will cancel and I will send you my next available dates or we can embrace it and grab some umbrellas if you want something really different! If its overcast, we will start approx 3 hours before sunset rather than 2!
7. What do you require to book a session?
I require a contract to be signed and $50 non-refundable retainer to secure your date.
8. How many photos will we receive?
You will receive approximately 100-200 high-res, edited, images.
9. How long until we receive our photos?
Galleries are delivered no later than 3-4 weeks after your session.
10. Can we share our photos?
Of course! You absolutely can post to social media, share your gallery with friends and family, and print with other companies. And if you don't mind, tag me so I can come love on your pictures, too!
11. Can we order prints?
Yes! You will have the option of ordering tangible prints through your online gallery, although that is not required. You can also order prints through other websites, but I recommend using only websites that print in high quality.
12. How do we pay you?
Payment is made directly through your online invoice! Final payment is due the day before your session.
13. How long will our gallery last?
I promise your gallery will be available for 2 weeks. During this time you can download your images to your computer, devices, google drive, etc. If you need your gallery open longer, just send me an e-mail!
Don't be afraid to dress up
Have you thought about rocking a romantic gown, tulle skirt or flower crown but just never had an occasion for it? This is your chance to do it up! Remember: There is no such thing as “too dressed up” when it comes to your engagement session, so don’t be afraid to have some fun! If you don’t want to add a new permanent piece to your collection, a lot of my clients love Rent the Runway for their session because it’s such an affordable way to feel like a million bucks. Other clients love having a great excuse to bring a new permanent piece (or two!) into their closet!
Say "yes" to the dress
Long, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to the photos. Especially when juxtaposed with nature. Cute, shorter-length dresses photograph beautifully as well. Dresses and skirts tend to look most stunning on camera because they really flatter the female body — which is probably why the red carpet is always full of so many dresses and not very many pantsuits! We recommend avoiding pants and shorts for your session, and saying yes to a dress or two.
One or two looks
Most of my clients who choose two outfits will bring one “wow” dress, and then another shorter sun dress or cute jeans and top for a more casual “us on a date” feel. But if you want to bring two “wow” dresses and forgo the more casual dress altogether, give yourself permission to do it! Remember, though, you don’t have to bring two looks if it’s too stressful or you’d rather just stick to one fabulous look. One outfit that you love will be so much better than one outfit you love and another you’re not very excited about. So, one or two? It’s really up to you! Most importantly though, choose something that you love and will feel confident in.
Choosing colors
When choosing colors for your outfits, we recommend selecting lighter tones and more muted shades. By avoiding ultra-bright, bold colors, it will help bring all the attention to your faces and let the eye focus on the way you feel about each other. The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown and white. That softer color palette fits beautifully into almost all natural outdoor environments.
Coordinating the look
As you’re coordinating your outfit with your fiance’s, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palettes coordinate, but don’t necessarily “match.” You should each aim to wear a different dominant color, but stay within a similar color palette family. So if you’re wearing a blush dress, soft blue earrings and nude heels (blush being your dominant color), then he could wear a navy coat with gray pants, paired with brown leather shoes and maybe even a blush pocket square. Now he has his own dominant color (navy) while still incorporating a few touches of your color palette. Most of our brides choose their dress first, and then put together their fiance’s outfit based on that. That’s why we have a section for each of you.
Flattering your figure
In my experience, every woman, regardless of her shape has an area of her body that she’s self-conscious about, so recognizing what area that is in advance is key. Choosing flattering silhouettes and colors that complement your natural features is the best way to ensure you’ll love the way you look in your photos. Three-quarter length sleeves create an awesome slimming effect on all arms, so be on the lookout for an option with a longer length sleeve. You could also bring a cute jacket, blazer or cardigan along, too. Skinny straps or strapless dresses have the opposite effect on arms on camera, so I recommend avoiding those whenever possible if your goal is a set of slimmer-looking arms. Heels elongate women’s legs, making them look fabulous. Closed-toed heels in particular look great on camera because they carry out the line of your leg all the way down to your toe. If your toes are showing in a peep-toe heel, you might want to schedule a pedicure before your session so you don’t regret letting your feet show. These little tricks make all the difference! Be aware that if you choose an outdoor location that takes a little work to get to, you might want to choose a shoe that has some protection—boots work great for these areas!
Make a statement
Pairing an accessory or two with your outfit can really help bring some extra dimension to your images. Big statement necklaces bring a lot of pop to the photos, while the smaller, delicate ones are not be as noticeable on camera. Belts, bracelets and earrings bring great visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention. Fresh florals in a crown or bouquet can be a really romantic touch as well.
Go pro: hair & makeup
Professional hair and makeup is on the top of most of our brides’ checklists because it looks amazing and removes the stress of getting ready on your own. Whether it’s lash extensions or blown-out hair, professional hair and makeup will give you an extra boost of confidence in front of the camera, and it always photographs like a dream. This is the perfect opportunity to have your trial with YOUR own make up artist for the wedding day. If you’re working with a makeup artist, have her apply your makeup in natural light, if possible, so that it looks fresh and not too heavy. Plus, that’s the type of light we’ll be shooting in, so it’ll give you the best expectation of how it will translate on camera. Most of our brides feel like their makeup is “too much” at first, since it’s more than you would wear on a normal day, so if you feel that way at the beginning, don’t worry! Good makeup artists know how to get it just right for the camera — and our brides always love the final result.
Skip the spray tan
Although it might seem counter-intuitive, I recommend that you do not get a spray tan before your session, even a few days prior, because it tends to photograph orange even when it’s applied subtly and by a professional. Your actual skin tone will photograph the most beautifully and naturally.
Show off the ring
I will always try to get a shot of the ring on its own and on your hand during your engagement session. Your ring will be center stage, so give yourself permission to get it cleaned and your nails done, too! To make your ring really sparkle in photos, have it professionally cleaned by your jeweler (They will clean it for free!) or use appropriate jewelry cleaner before your session.
Match your location
Downtown: jeans/pants (or a jumper/romper), a cute top, and a jacket. Or a cute date night dress!
Field, meadow: Flowy dresses! Think bohemian, ethereal, whimsical magic! Tulle and lace are perfect materials or a cute floral dress from altr’d state or a similar store. There is nothing more breathtaking than a sunset photo with a girl spinning in a dress!
Woods: For a forest feel, the same from field and meadow apply, but you can also do some flannel, sweaters, felt hats, and boots for a more fall feel!
Water: Heading for the lake or river for your shoot? Go for a short dress or skirt! This way you can get in the water without getting soaked, especially if heading to another location after. If you don’t mind getting soaked, though, a long dress that flows and moves in the water can be gorgeous!
Park: Blue jean miniskirts, jeans, or short dresses all look cute! Perfect for a stroll on the greenway or a sidewalk.
A good jacket
Men look most striking in a well-tailored suit jacket. Blazers broaden a man's shoulders while still cutting in at the waist. If he doesn’t have one, now’s the perfect time to invest in something he’ll wear for the rest of his life! The best part? It’s a lot less expensive than you might think! While custom suits can cost thousands of dollars, some of the most well-known brands have off-the-rack suits in their stores for a fraction of the price. Solid shades of gray or navy are a strong complement to most women’s outfits, whereas pinstripes or plaid patterns tend to distract the eye.
A layered look
Next time you walk by a store like J. Crew, you’ll notice the male mannequins and models are always wearing several layers at once. Layers on men look great on camera, so even when it’s hot outside, trust me when I say that it’s worth an hour or two of discomfort for photos that will last you both a lifetime. Adding another layer will bring extra dimension and visual interest to your photos. Blazers, vests and coats up the level of any look. If the temperature permits, he could even consider adding a v-neck sweater with a pop of color from a long-sleeved collared shirt and tie underneath. Don’t be afraid to get a little creative with layers!
It's all in the details
Long pants and closed-toed shoes are the most sophisticated and masculine looks for men. They draw attention away from his legs and feet and place it where you want it: on the face you fell in love with. So, for your session, it’s best to leave the shorts and sandals at home. Dress pants, nice jeans or colored pants work best. Brown leather dress shoes complement almost every look, whether he’s wearing a full suit or a blazer and colored pants. Ties, bowties, pocket squares, colored socks, belts, tie clips, suspenders, vests and watches are sharp complements to any suit. If two suits are too stressful, no problem! One look will do the trick! You can still mix and match accessories to complement both of her dresses without doing a full change during the session. So, either way, you win.
How to prep your man
Most men aren’t overly excited to take photos for one to two hours, because they don’t have an expectation of what’s to come and why it’s so important to you. Take fifteen minutes to educate and empower your guy. Tell him why you chose me and my style of photography. Show him your three favorite images that I’ve taken, explain why you love them and express to him how much it means to you. Trust me, once he knows it’s important, he’ll light up the camera for you! The most common thing I hear from guys before photo sessions is this: because of a bad experience in the past, they don’t like taking photos or don’t think they’ll be good at it. By the time I’m done, though, they can’t believe how fast it went and just how much fun they had!
After your session
Don’t forget to plan a dinner date. You’re already going to be all dressed up! Why not take advantage of it? We know the wedding planning process can feel all-consuming, so take some time after the session just for the two of you to relax and have some fun together.
One final note
I know I just gave you a lot to think about. I created this guide to help make your engagement session experience something you’ll look back fondly on for years and years to come. At the end of the day, though, the location you choose and the outfits you select won’t matter nearly as much as the memories you make together. Your future marriage is the most important thing, and I want your engagement session to be a time for you to just be yourselves and enjoy it. Have fun together. Laugh a lot. And I’ll take care of the rest!
